Walmers Yard, London (2016)

Multifab were commissioned by Shaw Group Ltd to develop, manufacture and install bespoke bathroom pods and elliptical staircases at the Walmer Yard project on behalf of eminent Architect Peter Salter.

Peter had spent 13 years planning the ground-breaking project that sees doorways disguised as mirrors, secret corners, moving walls and yurt shaped room feature in the elaborate townhouses that have since received worldwide acclaim.

The 15 bathroom pods were all unique and were designed to encapsulate bath, shower and toilet facilities within complex and challenging shape designs. The double skinned pods were designed and developed within Multifab’s Peterborough facility where attention to detail in terms of site installation logistics were crucial. Many complex strings and curves were used to obtain the desired shapes which were then sent to site in kit form for installation. In site welding of panelling was executed to the Architects specific requirements and the bare metal panels were then waxed and sealed to give a truly industrial/Urban effect.

Similarly, the communal staircases were equally as challenging as they were to be installed in a pre-cast four storey elliptical concrete tube. The stair stringers were to closely follow the contours of the tube with mid-point floor landings apparently floating without a central support column. Again, a metal/Urban effect was achieved and finished article has received plaudits from across the globe.
